So I just flushed part of my cloth diaper down the toilet. Well, Phin's diaper, not mine. He had been the last to wear it. Well, the last of those who have, me not being one of them. Point being: As I was rinsing the wee-est one's poop out I flushed prematurely accompanied by what turned out to be a poor grip on the diaper insert and - whoosh! - it was gone. I tried to plunge to no avail. I didn't really have hope for that. I mean, do we really think the plunger's gonna pull back up a diaper? All right, the diaper insert. The main diaper didn't get flushed. Still. So, after giving the token plunge or two I made the call in to Andy and left a message with him. I mean, who doesn't want to look forward to a plugged toilet the rest of one's work day?
So make me feel better. What else have people accidentally flushed?
I once flushed a cloth diaper, too. It clogged our main sewer line, and Stephen and Uncle Terry had to dig up and replace most of the line, though that was primarily because it had been improperly put in, and they merely discovered the problem while searching for the diaper.
So we switched to disposables.

Posted by: willa Ibach at April 3, 2007 07:41 PMsome youngin flushed a spoon down our toilet (shortly before we bought this place). very stubborn. the plumber and his snake earned their money.
someone around here flushed a couple disposable nursing pads one time. they've got the same stuff in them as disposable diapers, so they swelled up real quick. fortunately they didnt make it far, so I just reached down and fished them out....have you tried that yet?
Posted by: bobw at April 3, 2007 08:45 PMFunny you should ask. Josiah just got a sweet mini-swap package in the mail from a fellow mommy blogger and in it was a tiny lava lamp. Pretty much a snowglobe that changed colors. I heard Josiah flush the toilet and the water was running and running, I thought he ws just holding the handle down to long. I said, "Jos! Stop!" leaping to see if the water was on the floor yet. Found out from Joel (Josiah didn't tell me) that he flushed his "rocket ship" down the toilet. What I don't get is that he really liked this toy and he only was playing with it for a total of like 4 hours. It's Mom and Dad's toilet too. My poor parents.
Posted by: katiek at April 3, 2007 11:09 PMOne of my favorites toile stoppers is when Josh Green was small he threw a tinkertoy across the room lodging it in the toilet. It was one of the round tinker toys with a straight tinker toy firmly attached and as it spun in the air the stick side went in first firmly holding the circular tinkertoy wedged in ~ I don't remember how Artie 'released' it.
Posted by: Mom at April 4, 2007 07:42 AMMy girls have flushed lots of toys down the toilet. The Playskool Little People do not go down! I have never flushed down a diaper, but I have had to put on rubber gloves and fish out a handful of prized Sesame Street rings. I have also had to pull bread out of Izzy's nose, which is much harder than fishing stuff out of the toilet. Glad to see you posting again. I was beginning to worry that the strep had done you in!
Posted by: Christina at April 4, 2007 08:18 AMI have no great advice or words of wisdom to offer, but you guys just made me laugh so hard tea came out my nose! Thanks for the laughs, you guys!
Posted by: jen k at April 4, 2007 08:33 PMHey Lynn,
I flushed a cleaning rag (an old yarn-doily-washrag) down the toilet when I was pregnant with Clara and our only toilet was pretty darn clogged for a week. Eventually, it moved on down the pipe, after lots of attempts with a plumber's snake and plungers. We hoped to get it out, but it did move on to somewhere else, maybe to the alligator's lair.
Clara has flushed a cell phone down the toilet, while we were staying at a friend's house. Our poor friends had to yank the toilet off and dig around to get it out.
Thanks for the laugh. Matt often disappears into the netherworld of the basement too. We call it the bat cave. Maybe there really is a butler and strange equiptment down there. ;)
